Computers composing good music seems like a promising area of research and development. Perhaps a program which composes music completely autonomously, but more likely a tool which helps a human composer.
Probably machine learning.
Unfortunately, the domain-specific expert knowledge needed to develop such a tool seems buried deep inside the minds of current composers, a group of people stereotypically not considered too computer savvy, so their knowledge seems difficult to extract. Though this stereotype could be false due to the tremendous amount of electronic music being composed these days.
On the other hand, there does exist a lot of music education material, as well as a huge number of examples of both good and bad music, perfect for machine learning.
