Science is about being while engineering is about doing. Curiously, all scientific experiments are engineering, although the "doing" could simply measuring.
Mathematics has a bit of science and engineering. Creating new theorems from old theorems is "doing", while the theorems themselves are.
This distinction is key for education. Studying "being" quickly becomes boring and the student loses interest.
