Consider a realistic battle between spaceships firing missiles with nuclear warheads at each other. What would defense look like? Assume realistic technology: no Star Trek energy shields.
For spaceships to be able to withstand one hit, they would need to be built comparable to Cheyenne Mountain-like nuclear bunkers. This is a mind boggling amount of material to launch into space, then to drive around. One imagines a cratered (in the style of nuclear testing grounds) but still functioning spacecraft.
Patriot-like interceptor missiles (from Anti Ballistic Missile defense systems) and lasers might be a practical way to shoot incoming missiles out of the sky before they reach you.
With powerful enough engines, one might be able to outrun a missile, which will run out of fuel first.
