It is surprising that a military has not invented a practical laser gun, yet.
What you see through the scope is exactly where the laser will hit, in contrast to a bullet which drops in a parabolic trajectory (way more than light). The target will not move appreciably in the time it takes for the laser to travel.
Generating short, extremely powerful pulses of laser light is a solved problem from fusion research. So long as the gun does not need to be fired continuously, the average power draw is not very high.
Sniper rifle. Shooting airborne assault paratroopers out of the sky.
Can the target use reflective materials as a defense? Corner reflectors could be devastating.
