A soccer game ends in regulation in a tie. For purists of the game, a tie is thus the true result. However, if a winner must be chosen, then it might as well be a coin flip, reflecting the pointlessness of choosing a better among true equals. Penalty kicks, so radically different from the rest of game play, are an elegant implementation of a coin flip.
Possibly applicable to chess to resolve draws, especially drawn matches, with blitz.
