Every generation of kids takes up a new dance form to shock their parents: waltz, swing, grinding club dancing. What will the next generation bring?
Currently, the term "horizontal blues dancing" is still merely a joke: a smarmy euphemism for sex. However, I predict that, at some point in the future, some new group of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers will develop and popularize an actual dance form that could be described by that phrase. It might be a fusion of moves from vertical blues, cuddling, contact improv, and dry humping (gotta shock those parents -- which will be us!), but done as art and to music. All the ingredients already exist: every art form is built upon something previous.
And, of course, all forms of partner dancing were originally invented by, and for, people who like each other.
It will probably again get banned at school dances by uptight adults of the previous generaton (us!). Footloose: The Next Generation?
