Wikipedia currently aggressively deletes original research, but it could improve its philosphy.
While original research would still not be acceptable for the main article, it could always provide a link, perhaps a forum, for people doing and posting original or self-published research. Instead of deleting content, it's always merely moving content from the main to the research forum. The article serves as a virtual meeting point for those interested in the topic. Eventually, work starting there might bubble up to the verifiable and peer-reviewed standards suitable for the main article.
Essentially Wikipedia hosts, or provides a link to, Journal of Foo, or, arXiv of Foo, for all Foo.
