it's generally acceptable to call the time period from 12:00 AM (midnight) to 11:59 AM "morning", for example, the song "Good Morning" in Singin' in the Rain.
English seems to have no word or phrase to denote the complement, the time period from noon to just before midnight, in Latin, post meridiem (PM). the literal translation of the Latin, "afternoon", denotes in English noon til sundown. maybe "afternoon and evening", though "evening" could mean sunset to sunrise. "afternoon and evening before midnight" is so unwieldy that it's easier just to say "between noon and midnight".
