if chess is extended to a larger board, ranged pieces naturally scale up in power, increasing their range, but knight does not. (king and pawn also do not get more powerful, but those seem fine not to fix.)
(note: bishop only increases in range on larger square boards, not on rectangular boards such as 8x10 Capablanca chess.)
therefore, introduce pieces that combine the abilities of knight and a ranged piece, namely, archbishop (B+N), marshall (R+N), and amazon (Q+N).
for example 10x10: retire the knights. introduce 1 Q+N, 1 R+N, and 2 B+N of opposite colors, totaling 10 pieces on the back rank. although the B+N start on opposite colors, they are not colorbound.
in general, compound of zero or more unranged abilities (wazir, ferz, alfil, dabbaba, knight) and one or more ranged abilities (bishop, rook, dabbabarider), perhaps avoiding multiply colorbound.
