[ctwuhjtt] Liking people who dislike you

The people you want to be around don't want to be around you.  The people who want to be around you you don't want to be around.  Why and how does this social phenomenon occur?  It results in lonely people.  

Hypothesize social class: people hope for upward social mobility, so look with disdain those of their social class and those below.

The question was vaguely inspired by heroin use in Vermont, on the Rat Park theory that people turn to drugs when they lack psychological and social connections.  But Vermont has no shortage of people.
