The usual story is that antibiotic resistant bacteria evolved through incompetence: over-prescription and improper use of antibiotics. However, could they actually have been bred through malice, perhaps by a Luddite, covertly released in hospitals to conceal where it came from? Is there any way we could tell? How difficult would such selective breeding be?
