Design consumer mechanical machines with sensors embedded in them, or some easy way to measure performance, with the expectation that the consumer will maintain and repair the machine.
Inspired by a window air conditioner. Is it functioning at optimal efficiency? It's impossible to tell unless there is something egregiously broken.
