Closer is a baseball position only created only because of a statistic: saves. Is starting pitcher another? A starting pitcher must complete 5 innings to record a win.
One could imagine a pitching platoon consisting entirely of "relievers", none of whom is expected to pitch 5 innings, but who all pitch more frequently than a starting pitcher in a rotation. However, no one will try such a thing because it prevents a pitcher from accumulating the "wins" statistic.
