gold used to be special because it was shiny, but nowadays we have aluminum, stainless steel, gold electroplating, chrome plating, etc.
gold remains special because it is heavy. at what karat gold does its density noticeably exceed cheaper metals (lead, silver)?
(nowadays we also have hefty tungsten cheaper than gold, but unlike gold, tungsten is very hard to work, so anything that has an interesting shape is probably not tungsten.)
