the electrification of the Northeast Corridor rail line was completed January 31, 2000. the MBTA Providence commuter rail line (Wickford Junction) runs on the Northeast Corridor. how long will it take for the Providence line to replace its loud, smelly, diesel locomitives with electric trains? (22 years and counting.)
this broadly demonstrates how America can't get its act together about rail. narrowly, what's the hold up?
electric trains are more energy efficient because they can easily do regenerative braking, pumping electricity back into the grid.
inspired by the electrified Philadelphia SEPTA regional rail.
