Consider chess variants in which the king is made less powerful of an attacking piece by placing limits on what it can capture. Inspired by reality in which the king might be old or not be trained as a soldier. Some subset of the following restrictions:
- King cannot capture all all.
- King can only capture pawns, not pieces.
- King can only capture the opposing king (so no adjacent kings).
Checkmate becomes a little easier because flight squares can be blocked with opposing pieces.
The endgame becomes very different with the king a less powerful piece.
In orthodox chess, stalemate makes the king unusually strong.
