Horror fiction might be able to effectively illustrate the structures in society, especially the social divisions, which are often hidden in American society. More importantly, the accuracy of the depiction can be measured by how commercially successful the horror is, though it remains paradoxical why people consume entertainment they dislike.
Inspired by the alleged racism of H.P. Lovecraft: he lived in an era when things like miscegenation was considered horrifyingly disturbing (perhaps we still do). Regardless of whether that attitude was internally present in him, he was probably consciously using the social division to write effective horror.
