The plot-driving curious incongruity of The Big Lebowski is that The Dude does not seem like the kind of person who would care about a rug so much. Then, what kind of person do we expect would care about a rug? What characteristics of The Dude cause us to initially assume he's the kind of person who doesn't care about rugs (only to have our assumptions subverted)? How did we come to have such assumptions?
