Most software distribution systems are designed around the tradition of only having one version (the latest version) of package installed. However, in an era where disk is cheap, this is no longer necessary. Furthermore, with tricks like deduplication, having multiple versions need not even cost a lot of disk. There remains the tricky UI problem of selecting which of many installed versions to use.
Combined with DRM, software authors have abused this tradition to irreversibly remove desirable features.
