Record an event in high fidelity in 3D. Later, wear virtual reality goggles and replay the event immersively. VR with head tracking lets you move around, re-projecting the 3D recording from arbitrary vantage points. You can walk through virtual objects (and people) like a ghost.
The original idea was to record some successful social event like a party or rock concert, trying to capture for posterity the "energy" of the excited participants, usually described as "you had to have been there".
Although there may be limited cameras, the bidirectional reflectance function of people and the materials present (e.g., cloth) don't change much during the course of the event. Because people naturally move around, the cameras sample many angles of reflectance for later 3D virtual rendering.
One can replay the event at the same venue as it was recorded, placing the set pieces in the same locations, which allow at least some of the virtual objects to be re-experienced physically. If a music venue, the same speakers can replay the same sounds, though the sound reflectance will be different with the room empty.
