Tell a story of what might have happened if the Nazis achieved the Atomic Bomb first.
The twist is the Nazis end up being more responsible about using it than the Americans were. The idea is based on a kernel of truth that the academic, exemplified by the professor, commands far more respect in German society than in American. This respect may be closely linked to the very nationalism that underlies Nazism.
The academics involved in building the bomb, who truly understand its devastating power, perhaps joined by German philosophers, successfully appeal to the Führer not to use the bomb, an appeal which I think was tried but failed against the American President.
Perhaps the Nazis go on to lose the war, but steadfastly refusing to use The Bomb on principle, no matter how effective it might be. The completed bombs and records of internal debate are discovered by the Allied invaders at the end of the war.
The deeper point of the fictional story is to highlight how history is written by the victors, and the victors have convinced themselves the losers were pure Evil and the victors pure Good, which is probably inaccurate.
