The evil mastermind is depicted as having henchmen who will loyally do the mastermind's bidding.  This suggests power is really about assembling people around you whom you can trust, and conversely, thwarting someone else from acquiring power is about subverting and preventing trust relationships.

What mechanisms in society exist to prevent trust relationships from forming, perhaps to maintain the power of the status quo?
