If it is true that we would be just as entertained with a smaller entertainment industry, then are we irrationally spending too much on entertainment now? Perhaps not.
Entertainment could be extracting monopoly rents.
There could be a game-theoretic network effect in which a certain form of expensive entertainment becomes entertaining if everyone else is consuming it, too. We are stuck in local maximum.
