Write a fictional response regarding the Snowden leaks from a frustrated NSA official to the American people excoriating us for bringing this upon ourselves. Our Islamophobia fuels the war on terror. Our racism and implicit desire for a strongly stratified society fuels the war on drugs. Our awkwardness about sexuality fuels the war on pornography and sexual entertainment. No political candidate dares appear weak on these issues, so we keep electing politicians willing give the NSA a pass, in fact to direct the NSA to broad surveillance in the name of these issues.
You don't get the government you want: you get the government you deserve.
The letter has a distinctively NSA addendum: Acting within its directive of international surveillance, the NSA is privy to just how much our Islamophobic foreign policy justifiably causes tremendous unhappiness and anger abroad, and just how fucked up our attitudes toward sex are. Americans just don't want to hear it or do anything about it.
