Hypothesis: all long marriages are de facto open marriages, where "open" is that both partners engage in extramarital affairs, but may or may not be concealing them from one another. Perhaps the agreement is each will purposefully remain ignorant about the other's affairs.
If true, this is a truth that a great many people, perhaps just entering into marriage in hopes for a long monogamous one, do not want to hear.
"Seven Year Itch."
In principle, this can be measured, albeit with the difficulty of uncovering concealed information (perhaps NSA data can help) and avoiding investigator bias.
If true, society is programming people to be doomed to unhappiness: either the expectation of a long marriage or of a monogamous one must fail. If true, one wonders what other highly counterproductive customs of society exist, and how they are kept in place.
