[mqlkhjtu] Art for social change

Is art ever an effective vehicle for social change?  Or is the art that enough people see to potentially cause social change, art that has become popular, such that it merely reflects what people already believe (fueling its popularity).

Many possible complexities: art which partially reflects what people want to see and partially not,  advocating change.  Art as a vehicle for the artist to achieve power and influence.  Mechanisms which unpopular art is forcibly disseminated at the populace.

Inspired by the frequent yet potentially fallacious (and very dangerous, because it is censorship) proposal that regulating mass media can solve our gender inequality problems.
