Create a page of peel-off stickers with chess piece symbols. This should be easy. This is a cheap alternative to the traditional carved or molded pieces. The stickers can easily be mailed.
Attach the stickers to tiles (e.g., Scrabble tiles) or bottle caps or, more elaborately, five sides of a cube so both players can see an upright symbol. Or maybe just two sides, front and top.
