Stones (markers) in the game of go 囲碁 are traditionally circular, even though the area it occupies on the board is square (the Voronoi cell of a point).
For physical markers, this makes sense, because circular stones, as opposed to square ones, are easier to place (don't need to worry about orientation), easier to pick up, don't suffer damage of their corners getting lopped off, and probably easier and cheaper to make. Contrast this cheapness to chess, where the difficulty and expense of acquiring or making the differently shaped pieces thwarts the spread of the game, especially for the very poor.
However, for computer play, for display on a screen, square markers make more sense.
