"Federal funding is the soda; students are the straw.": heard elsewhere. Also heard John F. Kennedy correctly predicted this would happen.
Observed is educational institutions raising tuition in response to federally subsidized student loans. This is market failure in educational institutions who should be competing trying to keep costs low.
Ironically, because there is only one "buyer" of subsidized student loans, namely the government, one would expect to see the opposite market failure of a monopsony.
