One of the most difficult parts of a trebuchet (or similar device) is the sling carrying the projectile. It must release at precisely the right moment.
Instead of the traditional purely mechanical solution, consider a partially electronic one: it measures when the right moment has arrived with sensors, then electronically quick releases the projectile.
Inspired in part by the Mythbusters' difficulties with the giant slingshot, as well as difficulties seen in every trebuchet construction I have witnessed (including Mythbusters' again, boom-lift "catapult").
