Create cubical chess pieces with the piece symbol printed on top and all sides. Perhaps less likely to be tipped over, easier to manufacture, pack, view an ongoing game as a spectator.
What size should the cubes be relative to the square they sit on? Too large and they become difficult to pick up packed next to adjacent pieces.

Or cubes with a different of the 6 chess pieces on each face.
There was a (non-random) chess-like game Proteus which used such dice. You could change a piece's current type by reorienting the cube.
