Memorize the reticles of latitude and longitude lines in your area, at finer gradations in regions of interest. Memorize where the lines pass in relation to states, cities, neighborhoods, streets, etc. The general idea is you can roughly figure out where you are based on a coordinates only, not needing a data connection on your mobile device to display a map program like Google Maps.
(Though a map program does not necessarily need a data connection.)
