Let a season consist of several short single elimination tournaments. The season champion is the winner of the most tournaments. There is no postseason. Although a single single-elimination tournament has a high statistical variance, "summing" the results of many perhaps won't be. Single-elimination removes the ability for collaboration, but unfortunately combining many of them brings it back.
Apply this to chess: each day of a multiple day tournament consists of a single elimination blitz subtournament. The winner of the whole tournament is the winner of the most number of days. If eliminated early in the day, perhaps play exhibition games the rest of the day.
Consider playing all games as Basque system (from the Donostia (San Sebastian) chess festival) simultaneous pairs of games to eliminate the first-white advantage. Basque system blitz will, of course, be insane.
Or, matches as multiples of 4 games: WBBW.
