Was there a change in fertility (birth rate) during U.S. Prohibition? The hypothesized mechanism is drunken hookups.
I'd also believe an increase in fertility: denied alcohol, people sought other fun activities or other ways to achieve an enjoyable altered mental state.
Many other things going on then also could have affected fertility.
