Bobby Fischer decried round robin tournaments (in contrast to single elimination) to determine a chess champion, because it allows contestants to conspire and collaborate amongst themselves, throwing games, agreeing to draws, to skew results. Game theoretically, he is correct.
However, let us cynically call that a good thing, because these days we (as spectators) are no longer interested in determining who is the strongest player on earth (it's a computer!). Instead, we are interested in humans competing, that is, the human element. With that in mind, let there be intrigue, collaboration, behind the scenes negotiations and alliances; all these represent the entertainment of the human element. NASCAR does this.
The biggest flaw of 3-1-0 (football scoring) in a double round robin is it allows a pair to trade wins (3 points each) instead of draws (2 points each) for mutual benefit. But it does require the first winner to not renege on the collaboration and intentionally lose the second game. Will (s)he? So much intrigue!
