Every game must be zero sum, or else there will be incentive to throw games. I strongly suspect prizes are not structured this way in chess tournaments, leading to bad behavior in the final rounds.
But it does offer a new flexibility. Individual players may be sponsored differently. Sum of the stakes. Even individual games.
