In the olden days with rotary dial phones, the desirability of an area code was the sum of the digits, the distance the finger had to travel to dial it, and waiting for the dial to rotate back. New York, 212, has the most desirable area code. (Initial digit 1 is reserved, as is 211 for local community information.)
Nowadays with touch tone keypads, the desirability is the total distance between buttons for dialing the area code, plus the expected distance to the next digit (first digit of the prefix, which I think is constrained to 2 through 9). I suspect the unassigned 555 is theoretically the shortest. Who's got the real shortest?
