it is probably not authoritative, with inconsistencies such as both "St Clair" and "St. Clair". it still has "McCandless Township", even though the township officially changed its name (but not type) to "The Town of McCandless". (it's not clear whether it has the authority to change its name, or that the state has to recognize the name change.)
weird municipality names: "S.N.P.J." stands for "Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota". Valley-Hi is the only hyphenated municipality in the spreadsheet. "Wilkes Barre" is not hyphenated in the spreadsheet.

future work: the USGS Geographic Names Information System has even more names. of particular interest is Census Class Code "U6" (unincorporated communities that are not census designated places) from "Individual State Files with Federal Codes", which contains some 6000 more places. the online interface may be useful for understanding the data.
although some of the names are not very creative, the list represents a distributed process of human creativity over hundreds of years. someone had to come up with each name.
