the pronunciation of vegan as "vee-gan" not "vay-gan" is peculiar, as the pronunciation of e in vegetable and vegetarian is closer to the latter.

perhaps extraterrestrials from Vega influenced our language, steering us away from the pronunciation that would cause ambiguity.

original thought, inspired by Sliders: one can tell if a civilization has discovered FTL by the pronunciation of that word.  (idea adapted from some other source, don't remember what.)
