It's surprising that colorless sapphires are not popular as gemstones.  Marketing could spin that they more pure than rubies or colored (e.g., blue) sapphires, because color is always caused by impurities.  People like purity.

If you want pretty colors, consider colored glass.

Diamonds, while typically clear, can oxidize, and conflict diamonds have ethical problems.
