Tell a dark story in which a character is given God-like powers to make himself or herself happy. The character initially uses those powers in the not-too-evil ways that induce (some) happiness, perhaps acquiring material possessions or having fun experiences. However, the character starts doing more and more things causing harm to others, discovering that Schadenfreude is the greatest, perhaps only, true pleasure.
Perhaps many characters, all initially very different, inevitably converge on this same behavior.
