Examine carefully the reasoning of the Catholic Church's prohibition of abortion, on the assumption that they are a deliberative organization able to spend years, even generations, examining and understanding all the facets of an issue.
It will probably not simply be, "because God says so," because God has said many things, some of which the Church has chosen to disregard after similar deliberation. Arguments like rights of the mother are being abrogated are probably not falling on deaf ears.
It might be a cold-hearted rational calculation to preserve social order.
