One simple way to further the cause of chess as a sport, perhaps for Olympic competition, is to increase the number of hours of play per day in competition: perhaps two or more classical games per day, or longer rapid or blitz sessions.
Then, it will become clear that those in "good shape", with more stamina, will prevail over those do not, similar to other sports. It will necessarily make chess competition at the highest level less inclusive, but sport competition has always excluded those physically out of shape. The Olympics are full of young people.
