The saying goes, "You can tell a lot about a person by how he or she keeps his house." Exactly what can one tell? Which features about the upkeep of the house correlate with which features about the person? What is the mechanism of causation?
Probably difficult-to-conceal markers of social class, and people care about this "a lot".
