[stuvidxz] Model number labeling

Why is it that most consumer products, especially appliances and electronics, do not have their model numbers prominently displayed, usually just the brand?  It is often printed somewhere but in an awkward location (in the back or bottom or inside).  Model numbers make it easier for consumers to research their product, for example for repair or modification.
