Fairy chess permits a very large number of possible piece types. Instead of developing a new icon for every possibility, depict each piece with a QR code which directly encodes the piece's abilities.
A QR code is square. So are squares on a chess board.
This is more a universal format intended for fairy chess position diagrams for machine processing rather than something directly readable by humans. Humans should use a UI.
