Imagine a beam of a peculiar kind of energy that bends space around it (kind of like a gravitational lens) so that the beam remain tightly focused forever as it travels through vacuum. The motivation is intergalactic communication, assuming you can aim the thing properly. Or a weapon.
I can't decide whether this is science or science fiction. Self-focusing does seem to occur in materials, but it doesn't seem applicable to long range communication.
