Design chess positions (problems) around the theme of complexity.  Some ideas:

Either side can win depending on who moves first.  (The opposite of mutual zugzwang.)
Many defenses.
Making a mistake in the attack causes the evaluation to flip by a full point.  This can repeat again if the new attacker errs.

Sufficiently complicated positions may be the initial position of a fair and exciting game.
