There is no trickster god in mainstream American culture. The rabble-rousers, the non-conformists, the troublemakers, the trolls, cannot culturally defend themselves as channeling the spirit of a god. Instead they are derided as bad, wrong, or evil.
However, disruptive forces of change are important for a society to have, to be protected by a cultural mechanism as powerful as a god.
