[figlomhx] Arguments for fusion energy

Some speculative arguments for continuing to invest in fusion power research.  I have not done any research on whether these arguments are true.

  • Because it's there. It is a technology we will probably eventually need to power interstellar spacecraft.  Deuterium-tritium fusion is only a first step; there are more difficult, more energetic reactions to which we can apply our D-T wisdom after we master it.
  • Even though it seems we have enough uranium to power our civilization with fission reactors for the foreseeable future (uranium is very energy dense), perhaps we will run out due to exponential growth in energy consumption.
  • In order to use uranium effectively, particularly the highly prevalent form U238, we need to breed it to plutonium, first.  However, plutonium can be diverted to weapons.  Fusion avoids this nuclear proliferation problem.
  • All fusion reactions produce radioactive nuclear waste, just like fission reactors.  However, perhaps they produce less: although fusion is not clean, perhaps it is cleaner than fission.
  • Fusion fuel is so cheap compared to uranium that it is cost effective.
